Local Democracy Week (LDW)
Councillors and council staff joined together with children and young people across the county to celebrate the week in October.
The yearly series of events help young people learn about the work of their local council, and engage in local decision-making.
Last year, more than 45 councillors and young people attended the Democracy Dinner on Tuesday 13 October, at the Prostar Football Stadium in Shrewsbury. The event was hosted by the Shropshire Members of Youth Parliament (MYPs). They also hosted a Respect-Yourself-for-Teens Day with the Speaking-Out group and Health Development Team on the 16 October in Shrewsbury.
Councillors visited schools and youth clubs to talk about issues that are important to young people. Coucillors discussed their roles and responsibilities, whilst also showing us their fun side.
Councillor Aggie Caesar-Homden, Shropshire Council Cabinet Member for Children and Young People’s Services, said: “This year’s Local Democracy Week in Shropshire has been fantastic. The events have really helped young people to express their views, make suggestions and have their voices heard.
“I’d like to thank everyone who has worked so hard to make this year’s celebration one of the best yet.”
MYP Joe White, from Wem, said: “The events have been a great success and have provided opportunities for young people to talk to councillors.
"They have also shown that young people in Shropshire can make a difference. It was super-duper to see young people and councillors talking about a range of topics.”
